13.10.2018 Voters changed composition of the Senate after two years

The Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) finished processing of results of the elections to the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. After the second round of the elections, names of all the 27 new senators are known. Workers of the CZSO have not recorded during the elections any complications that would influence processing of the election results.

In the second round of this year’s senatorial elections, voters came to polling stations in 25 senatorial districts in total. In the electoral districts of Praha 4 and Vsetín, the second round did not take place, because voters selected their representatives in the Senate there already in the first round.

The turnout in the second round of the senatorial elections reached 16.49%; in the first round of the elections, 42.26% of voters came to the elections to the Senate. Two years ago, 33.54% of voters showed their interest in the senatorial elections in the first round, while in the second round it was 15.38%. The lowest number of votes necessary to win a seat in the Senate was 4,906 in the Ostrava-město district.

“The smallest difference between the numbers of votes was in the Domažlice district, in which the difference between the winner and the loser was 930 votes. The smallest difference between the advancing candidates in the first round of the senatorial elections was in the same district and was only six votes,” Eva Krumpová, Vice President of the Czech Statistical Office, said.

The average age of newly elected senators is 54.37 years. The oldest one is 71 years old; the youngest one is 40 years old. Voters sent 25 men and 2 women to the benches of the Senate.

236 candidates sought votes of their voters in the senatorial elections. Over 82% of the candidates were men, almost 18% were women. The average age of the candidates to the Senate was 56 years. There were 5 youngest candidates (40 years old); the oldest candidate was 79 years old. The oldest female candidate in the second round of the elections was 73 years old; one 40-year-old candidate advanced to the second round of the elections. Voters were selecting from 40 men and 10 women in the second round in total.

The highest turnout was recorded in the municipality of Čilá in the Rokycany District, in which 76.47% of voters came to the elections. The lowest interest was shown by voters in the municipality of Mnichov in the Sokolov electoral district, where the turnout was mere 3.35%. The last electoral ward was processed on Saturday at 5:08 p.m.

“The Czech Statistical Office has not recorded during both the election weekends any problems that would influence processing of election results in any way. Both, workers of the CZSO and members of ward election committees deserve to be thanked, because they have coped really very well with the two truly demanding weekends,” Eva Krumpová, added.

On Monday, the voting results will be negotiated by the State Electoral Committee. After their approval they will be published in the Collection of Laws of the Czech Republic.
