EU rail passengers made 8.7 billion trips in 2024

In 2024, people in the EU took 8.7 billion rail trips, amounting to a total of 444.5 billion passenger-kilometres (pkm).

Germany and France were the largest overall contributors to rail passenger transport performance, with 109.1 and 107.3 billion passenger-kilometres, respectively. Italy came next with 55.9 billion passenger-kilometres.

In contrast, 6 EU countries recorded less than 1 billion passenger-kilometres in 2024: Lithuania and Estonia (0.4 pkm each), Luxembourg (0.6 pkm), Latvia and Greece (0.7 pkm each) and Slovenia (0.9 pkm).

Relative to population, the highest ratio of passengers per capita in the EU countries was recorded in Luxembourg (46.2), followed by Austria (35.6) and Denmark (35.2). The lowest ratios were recorded in Greece (1.4), Lithuania (1.8) and Bulgaria (3.3).

  • Data for Belgium are confidential. Therefore, data for the entire EU are published only where the figures for Belgium cannot be calculated from EU totals. On this basis, data on passenger-kilometres exclude Belgium.
