In 2024, pesticide sales in the EU reached approximately 316 000 tonnes, marking an 8% rise over 2023. This reversal follows 2 consecutive years of decline in sales.
Pesticide sales in the EU in 2024 reflect a 12% decrease from 2011 levels, when nearly 351 000 tonnes were sold.
The main category of pesticides sold in the EU in 2024 was ‘fungicides and bactericides’ (40%), followed by ‘herbicides, haulm destructors and moss killers’ (35%) and ‘insecticides and acaricides’ (17%).
This information comes from data on pesticide sales published by Eurostat today. This article presents a handful of findings from the more detailed Statistics Explained article on agri-environmental indicator: consumption of pesticides.

For the 21 countries with data available for both years, sales decreased in 14 of them, most noticeably in Czechia (-44%), Italy (-43%), Ireland (-42%) and Portugal (-40%). Methodological notes
- EU data do not take into account confidential values, which represent less than 1% of the total sales over the entire time series.
- For the purpose of this publication, the figure for Denmark taken into account in the EU aggregate is based on the 2023 value.
- In this article, the term ‘pesticides’ refers to plant protection products and covers the following categories: ‘fungicides and bactericides’, ‘herbicides, haulm destructors and moss killers’, ‘insecticides and acaricides’, ‘molluscicides’, ‘plant growth regulators’ and ‘other plant protection products’.
- In Austria, large volumes of inert gases, such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen, used in the storage of agricultural products inflate the total volume of pesticides sold.
