Czech Retail trade - April 2023. Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 7.7%, year-on-year (y-o-y) in April; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they decreased by 0.3%.


Sales in retail trade decreased in real terms by 7.7%, year-on-year (y-o-y) in April; in the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, they decreased by 0.3%.

Sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) decreased by 0.3% in real terms, month-on-month,in April. Sales for sale of automotive fuel decreased by 2.9%, whereas sales for sale of food increased by 0.2% and for non-food goods they stagnated.

Sales in retail tradedecreasedin real terms by 7.7%,year-on-year, in April. Sales for sale of non-food goods decreased by 9.5% and sales for sale of food by 9.3%, whereas sales for sale of automotive fuelincreased by 6.9%.

“Sales in retail trade adjusted for price effects decreased by 7.7%, year-on-year, in April. A decrease in sale of food and of non-food goods, which started in May 2022, also continued in April 2023. On the other hand, sale of automotive fuel recorded a sales increase, the same as in the previous month,” Jana Gotvaldová, Head of the Trade, Transport, and Services Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

“A sales decrease was recorded by all assortment types of stores and also by retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet. Lower sale in retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating and lower sale of other household equipmentin specialised stores had a significant influence on a decrease of sales in retail trade,” Marie Boušková, Director of the Trade, Transport, Services, Tourism, and Environmental Statistics Department of the CZSO, adds.

Sales in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores decreased by 16.5%, year on-year, in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores by 7.5%, in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 5.0%, in retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores by 3.8%, in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 3.7%, and dispensing chemist and medical goods by 2.5%. Sales from sale of food decreased in retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating by 9.4% and in specialised stores by 6.9%. In other retail sale in non-specialised stores sales increased by 4.1%. In retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet2) sales decreased by 6.8%.

Sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) decreased in real terms by 1.3%, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, sales increased by 6.3%; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 6.7% and sales for repair of motor vehicles by 4.8%.
