Press release - LUX European Audience Film Award: winner to be announced on 27 June in Brussels

The LUX Audience Film Award Ceremony will take place on 27 June at 18.00 in the hemicycle of the European Parliament in Brussels. The event will be open to Members of the European Parliament and the public, reflecting the way in which the winning film was selected by both MEPs and the audience.

Following a record number of ratings from the public and increased interest in the LUX Audience Award throughout the ongoing season, the European Parliament decided to organise, for the first time, a dedicated LUX Audience Award Ceremony to highlight the accomplishments of European cinema and acknowledge the public’s significant contribution.

Watch and rate

The winner of the award is selected jointly by the Members of the European Parliament and the public through ratings, each accounting for 50% of the final result. European citizens are invited to rate the films out of five stars until 12 June 2023. To rate the films, visit the LUX Award website.

Background

The five films nominated for the 2023 award are “Alcarras” by Carla Simón (Spain, Italy), “Burning Days” by Emin Alper (Turkey, France, Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Croatia), “Close” by Lukas Dhont (Belgium, France, Netherlands), “Triangle of Sadness” by Ruben Östlund (Sweden, Germany, France, UK) and “Will-o'-the-Wisp” by Joao Pedro Rodrigues (Portugal, France).

Since 2020, the LUX European Audience Film Award has been awarded by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network.

The award, known previously as “LUX Film Prize” was established by the European Parliament in 2007 to help promote and distribute European films with high artistic quality that reflect cultural diversity in Europe and beyond, and that touch upon topics of common concern, such as democracy, human dignity, equality, non-discrimination, inclusion, tolerance, justice and solidarity.
