On 12 October 2021, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tallinn in co-operation with the Representation of European Commission in Estonia and Czech and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs organized an expert round table focused on challenges and opportunities for the Czech and Estonian energy sectors in the context of the European Green Deal.

Participants included Estonian special envoy for energy and climate Kaja Tael, Czech ambassador-at-large for energy security Václav Bartuška, CDO of Eesti Energia Margus Vals, Deputy Secretary General for Energy and Mineral Resources at the Estonian Ministry of Economy and Communications Timo Tatar, Head of Energy Strategy Unit in the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade Tomáš Smejkal and many others.

The seminar addressed three clusters of issues: mitigation, financing and socio-economic impacts. In mitigation, the participants debated about what changes need to occur in energy sectors in both countries in their transition to carbon neutrality, including the role of gas, renewables, hydrogen and nuclear power. In the financing, the discussants focused on the role of EU fund and possible incentives for businesses to invest in environmentally friendly energy generation. Finally, in the debate on socio-economic impacts, participants discussed possible repercussions of the green transition for fossil-dependent regions, in Estonia concerning especially Ida Virumaa county, and how to tackle them.

The participants also tried to identify possible areas for a more concrete Czech – Estonian co-operation in the future and some specific proposals were already raised.

The event was organized thanks to the Programme of support of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and addressed particularly two of the SDGs, namely SDG 7: accessible and clean energy and SDG 13: climate measures.
