Lots of talk about the aurora yesterday and what an incredible show it was for many
2:00pm May 11 - Lots of talk about the aurora yesterday and what an incredible show it was for many across the south after a busy and stressful day of weather. This is what the aurora looked like from the office roof last night. A common question we've received is, will it happen again tonight?
While we are not heliophysicists, we can forward some information from the space weather experts at NOAA NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (NOAA SWPC). G5 conditions is what we observed last night across the US, but looking at current forecasts from the SWPC they only have G3 conditions forecast tonight. Unfortunately, this would likely *not* be enough for our area to see the aurora this far south. However, it should be noted the aurora did overperform yesterday, and you DONT want to miss out again tonight if it does end up overperforming.
While the forecast might not be promising for us down south, the best chance to see the aurora will be to get to a light-pollution free sky (away from the cities). There will be some mid-level clouds tonight, but the coverage appears low across the area, especially east of Alabama. So for tonight, keep those expectations low, but hope for the best!
