Press release - Opening: 20-23 November plenary session

Shooting of Alejo Vidal-Quadras

Speaking of former Member and Vice-President of the European Parliament, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, who was shot in Spain, President Metsola expressed Parliament’s full solidarity with him, trusting that the Spanish authorities are doing everything to bring the perpetrators to justice.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

With 22-year-old biomedical engineering student Giulia Cecchettin murdered recently in the North East of Italy, President Metsola reiterated that proper protection and more convictions are needed to end violence against women. “There are no more excuses. It is already too late”, she said, adding that Parliament must recommit to do everything possible to prevent violence against women and girls in Europe and beyond.

Children’s Day

On International Children’s Day, the President said Parliament will continue to help bring the many thousands of Ukrainian children who have been forcibly removed by Russia from their homes and advocate for their return. In conflict, in war, in aggression or acts of terror, it is too often innocent children who are forced to pay the ultimate price, she said. She called for the children held by Hamas to be brought home and for more to be done to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where “too many have died”.

Death of Karel Schwarzenberg

Remembering Karel Schwarzenberg - “a great European and a brilliant Czech statesman”- whose work was central in building modern-day Czech Republic, President Metsola said his legacy is one of endless struggle for peace, the construction of Europe and the democratic values that underpin our way of life.
